Microsoft has finally announced the release date for the final version of Windows 10. The next iteration of Windows operating system will be available on July 29. Starting from July 29th, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users will be able to upgrade their Windows 7/8.1 installation to Windows 10 for free of cost.

Although one can upgrade Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 installation to Windows 10 without losing data and by keeping most the installed programs, many of you might want to check for the possible compatibility issues before deciding to upgrade.

While it’s not possible to manually download and install Get the Windows 10 app from Microsoft, Get the Windows 10 app will be automatically downloaded and installed via Windows Update service on computers running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows 8.1 with latest updates. If Get the Windows 10 is installed, you will see a small Windows logo icon in

the system tray (the area next to date and time on the taskbar). And if you can’t see the icon, please make sure that the optional KB3035583 update is installed.

Simply click the Windows logo icon in the system tray to launch Get the Windows 10 app. If you haven’t reserved your free upgrade copy yet, please click the Reserve your free upgrade, enter email ID, and then send confirmation button.

To check for compatibility issues, click the small menu icon located at the top left-corner of Get the Windows 10 app, and then click Check your PC option. Upon clicking the option, the Upgrade Advisor will show what all programs will be removed (if there are incompatible programs) or what devices might not work when you upgrade to Windows 10.

For instance, when I ran the app on one of my notebooks, the app found that the Intel HD Graphics is not fully compatible with Windows 10. As you likely know, in most cases, device compatibility issues appear because of outdated drivers. So we recommend you update your device drivers if you are getting any warnings from Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor and then let it check again.

Finally, if you’re getting no warnings and seeing “You’re good to go” message, you need to do nothing until 29th of July. If you have reserved your Windows 10 free upgrade using Get the Windows 10 app, then the app will automatically download Windows 10 installation files in the background on or after July 29 and will help you upgrade your Windows 7/8.1 installation to Windows 10.
