Release date speculation - Tyrian Assembly

Posted 05 August 2010 - 01:42 AM

I was reading an article on Gametrailers () how Crysis 2 is being pushed to 2011.The sentence that got my attention was:

Is Q1 2011 really better for Crysis 2 with Dead Space 2, Dragon Age 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Bulletstorm, Spec Ops: The Line, and Killzone 3, just to name a few? Is any time better than any other nowadays?

I never realized how many popular games are being released for the first quarter of 2011. I forgot the source, but if ArenaNet stated that they didn't want to release the game in 2010 due to the amount of popular games releasing in Q3 and Q4 2010, then they'll probably not release it Q1, 2011.

I know some (if not the majority) thought it was going to be released Q2 or Q3 2011, but others (like me ) thought Q1.

What do you guys think?Edit: There is no confirmed source that Guild Wars 2 will NOT be releasing Q1 2011; it was my only my theory. The source that I forgot:

"I believe there will be a certain public event in the year 2010, so at this point it could be at least a closed beta test for [Guild Wars 2 and Korea-oriented martial-arms MMOG Blade & Soul]. The commercialization will be expected at this point probably sometime in the year 2011"-CEO Jaeho Lee

The only game I can consider having any influence on when ANet releases GW2 is The Old Republic, and ANet doesn't strike me as the type of company that would do that. Maybe NCSoft would do something, but as it is I don't think anything would replace "when it's done" until I see a source.

you wanna know what I think! *grabs adjacent squirrel, and repeatedly punches in face* They should just give us a legit date to make us stfu!

Posted 05 August 2010 - 01:46 AM

I think the thread title is pretty misleading. I never planned on Q1, so I'm not surprised, and I still think Q2.

Posted 05 August 2010 - 01:47 AM

...Damn, use question marks. That thread title just scared the out of me.

Posted 05 August 2010 - 01:52 AM

Anet never said anything about not wanting to release the game in 2010. In fact, they haven't said anything about a release date except "when it is finished" ™ Q1 to whatever be it 2010, 2011 or otherwise was all completely generated by the community not by Anet themselves..... Besides, none of those games you listed besides ST:TOR is even in direct competition with GW2.

And I think GW2 is going to knock ST:TOR down a few pegs once it gets released ;)

There are always going to be high profile games released every season. Waiting for a time when one WON'T be released is like waiting for the moon to turn to a great big pair of fluffy pink dice. Some release decisions make sense, i.e. don't release it when another game of virtually the same genre is coming out. The only game that could possibly be a contender for a delayed or precipitate release of GW2 imho would be Diablo III.

Posted 05 August 2010 - 02:03 AM

Aren't all those games on consoles? Multiplats to be precise?
I don't think Anet will worry about multiplat games giving them competition.

Why in the world do people think that game is good? Honestly, it's another boring gameplay filled MMO. Look at it for gods sake compared to Guild Wars 2.Thats my opinion, if anything The Old Republic would move its date around Guild Wars 2.

How about a more sensationalist title, please. Jeez. As far as the games you listed only DA2 comes close to being in the same sub-market. Sure, lots of blockbuster names, but people looking for MMO type fun are going to buy it. I honestly don't give a crap about any of those games except maybe DA2, and that's if I'm bored with online game first. There are two things GW2 needs to care about: Cataclysm and SWTOR. Nothing else comes close in its arena, IMHO.

Cataclysm will probably release sometime this year before the end of 2010, considoring the beta going on right now, SWTOR is sort of in the air right now.

Yeah, hasn't Blizzard already stated that their (vile filled) expansion was going to be realised this year. Honestly, by the time Guild Wars 2 comes out, a lot of semi-WoW-taurds would have gotten their high and remebered how awful the game is. A most perfect moment for Guild Wars 2 to be out on the market. Now SWTOR is different, it could be out this year, next year, or in 2090... It could pose a good threat considering that it has Star Wars on the cover. My best bet is that anyone coming out of WoW will come to either game. Two more weeks until Gamescom, that is all I am concerned about when it comes to GW2.

Posted 05 August 2010 - 02:44 AM

Well, from the Univers Virtuels interview:

UV: The three books that fill the gap between GW1 and its sequel should have been released before Guild Wars 2 comes out. Will you be able to keep up with that delay considering that the first tome will only be released soon?

Jeff: Yes, we are on track with our schedule so far. We just released Ghosts of Ascalon on July 27th and the feedback has been very positive

so far. It makes us very happy and excited, as we are working on the second and third novels. J. Robert King is well underway with Edge of Destiny, the second novel in the trilogy of Guild Wars novels, which is currently scheduled for release at the end of this year, and we are finalising our discussions about the third novel.

If the third novel is not yet being written, but they're still on schedule, seems the release is a ways off. It was over a year between Forbeck delivering his first draft to Anet until the publication of GoA. Of course, they may have taken their time with the first book, knowing the game was not anywhere near ready. But I think Grubb recently said they had the first draft of the second book, and its still december before its published. If "discussions" means the third book hasn't even begun to be written yet, seems it'll be a while before its in stores. Of course, maybe they're planning to release it very close to GW2 itself, but still, I'd guess that's well into Q2 2011 at the very least.

every game you mentioned in that list looks like total $h*t.

Yep, but I have to admit that I'll try DA2.

Posted 05 August 2010 - 02:56 AM

We already have a release date for GW2: when it's ready. At this point I don't think Anet really cares what else is being released. The real issue was the game was not close to being finished this year (2010). If it was we'd see much more content.

Here is the quote about Guild Wars 2's release somewhere in 2011

Arena Net stated their 2011 plan in November 2009. I'm no game developer but I think one year is enough to polish a game that started developing since (I want to say early 2007, but I'm not 100% sure).

Ugh a closed beta >.>...wonder how the selection process will work and how one can get a key if they do decide to have it closed.

Posted 05 August 2010 - 04:04 AM

The thing is, most of those so called "popular" games pretty much suck. Hard.

Posted 05 August 2010 - 04:14 AM

I've been doing research into the other MMO's coming out and I've discovered that GW2 is actually being "hyped" up more than the Old Republic. I also believe that Anet isn't going to push back the date because of other titles. They didn't show anything at E3 because they wanted to stick to the fans, which sounds to me that they want to get it out to us asap, without worrying about other companies, etc.

Sorry to nitpick, but a random quote without information on when/where it was uttered and which publication or website published it and when is not a proper citation. Also without the rest of the interview/conversation, we have no way of knowing if the text in the square brackets correctly identifies the pronoun it was most likely replacing.

That said, I had been hoping for a launch date in time for the Xmas holiday this year, but I'm getting the feeling that isn't very likely. :(

Different strokes for different folks.I'll admit I'm excited for DA2 and Dues Ex

Posted 05 August 2010 - 04:17 AM

I'm thinking Q1 or Q2 of 2011. Q2 would make the most sense, as the 6 year birthday of GW1 is in April.

I agree, if you go to MMORPG.com GW2 has been the "Top Voted Game" for some time now. :D

@OP I hope you realize nothing in that quote suggests that A-Net is stalling b/c of other games. So you might as well be saying the sky is brown b/c of a qoute saying that sunlight helps plants grow.

Posted 05 August 2010 - 04:50 AM

@Joiry, in the recent Ten Ton Hammer interview with Jeff Grubb, I think he said that the second book was finishing up, and that the writing process for the third book was already underway. Gonna check.EDIT: Checked the interview; they said they "are getting the copy-edited versions" of the second book and that the third one was "being written right now."

Guys... NCSoftassumedit to have public beta around 2010 and theyassumedit to be out Q1 (or maybe they said early...) 2011, anet have never said anything else, except ofc "when it's done/ready/finished"edit: Just listened to the conference call again, he said "sometime in 2011"and I looked at the chart again, it just say 2011 as well, no "Q's".

Remember, this is NCSoft (not anet), they need to say something, or else the people that give NCSoft their money will abandon them, because they don't want to lose their money (stock holders? meh, I have no idea what it's called, do not really care either :P)
